Africa's time zones range from UTC-1 to UTC+4, spanning 5 hours of difference across the continent. Unlike many other regions, most African countries do not observe Daylight Saving Time (DST), making time calculations more straightforward.

Time Zones Breakdown

  • UTC-1: Cape Verde (westernmost African time zone)
  • UTC+0 (GMT/WET): Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania, Senegal, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Mali, Côte d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Togo, São Tomé and Príncipe
  • UTC+1 (WAT/CET): Nigeria, Niger, Chad, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Republic of the Congo, DR Congo (western), Angola, Namibia, Benin, Algeria, Tunisia
  • UTC+2 (CAT/EET): South Africa, Namibia (Walvis Bay), Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, eSwatini, Lesotho, Egypt, Libya, Sudan, DR Congo (eastern), Rwanda, Burundi
  • UTC+3 (EAT): Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Comoros, Madagascar, Mayotte
  • UTC+4: Mauritius, Seychelles, Réunion (easternmost African time zone)

Daylight Saving Time in Africa

Most African countries do not observe Daylight Saving Time. Notable exceptions:

  • Morocco: Observes DST, switching between UTC+0 and UTC+1 (except during Ramadan)
  • Egypt: Has occasionally implemented DST but currently does not observe it

Special Cases

DR Congo spans two time zones: UTC+1 in the west (Kinshasa) and UTC+2 in the east (Lubumbashi).

Spain (Canary Islands) and Portugal (Azores) are geographically near Africa but follow European time zone conventions.
